Monk Who is Perfected in Morality (First Discourse)
Read Chapter 122 of Foundation in The Teachings: Monk Who is Perfected in Morality (First Discourse).
And how, Sir, is a Monk perfected in morality?
Abandoning the taking of life, he resides refraining from taking life, without stick or sword, diligent, compassionate, trembling for the welfare of all living beings. Thus he is accomplished in morality.
Abandoning the taking of what is not given, he resides refraining from taking what is not given, living purely, accepting what is given, awaiting what is given, without stealing. Thus he is accomplished in morality.
Abandoning unchastity, he lives far from it, distant from the village - practice of sex. Thus he is accomplished in morality.
Abandoning false speech, he resides refraining from false speech, a truth-speaker, one to be relied on, trustworthy, dependable, not a deceiver of the world. Thus he is accomplished in morality.
Abandoning malicious speech, he does not repeat there what he has heard here to the damage of these or repeat here what he has heard there to the damage of those. Thus he is a peacemaker of those in conflict and an encourager of those to come together, rejoicing in peace, loving it, finding joy in it, one who speaks up for peace. Thus he is accomplished in morality.
Abandoning harsh speech, he refrains from it. He speaks whatever is blameless, pleasing to the ear, agreeable, reaching the heart, courteous, pleasing and attractive to the multitude (many people). Thus he is accomplished in morality.
Abandoning idle chatter, he speaks at the right time, what is correct and to the point, of Teachings and discipline. He is a speaker whose words are to be treasured, meeting the needs of the occasion, well thought out, well-defined and connected with the goal. Thus he is accomplished in morality.
